Making Professional Development Central to Member Value
Professional development is no longer a nice-to-have for association members but the reason they join. A Naylor article cites Smithbucklin’s 2025 “Unlocking Value for Members” report, saying 88% of members list career growth as a primary driver for joining. Yet many associations continue to treat career support as peripheral, resulting in a gap between expectations and delivery. This misalignment affects retention, engagement, and long-term relevance, particularly as younger professionals seek clear pathways, practical tools, and targeted opportunities to grow their careers.
The challenge isn’t just a lack of resources but a lack of visibility and integration. Members are asking specific questions about their next steps, identifying skill gaps, inquiring about salaries, and exploring job prospects. If associations don’t answer, platforms like LinkedIn and even TikTok will.
General job boards are failing to meet the needs of niche professionals, but associations have an edge: industry credibility, curated audiences, and employer trust. Yet many career centers remain underpromoted and disconnected from broader programming.
Leading associations are addressing this by embedding professional development throughout the member experience. From personalized content journeys to data-informed programming and integrated employer engagement, these organizations view career growth as a core benefit, not an add-on.
For association executives, the path forward is clear: elevate your career center, align content with job market trends, and treat professional development as the cornerstone of your member value proposition. You already have the audience and credibility. Now is the moment to deliver on the promise of helping them grow.
