Leverage These Six Trends to Optimize the Association Member Experience
Association member experience largely influences the level of interest and engagement people have with an association. The criteria for a good experience is shifting and members are prioritizing how relevant, intuitive, and visible the encounter is, according to a sponsored article from Higher Logic published in Associations Now.
Insights from the recent Association Member Experience Report by Higher Logic and the Marketing General Incorporated’s Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report reveal six important trends for associations to think about. The shifts are:
- Tech-driven expectations: Technology is no longer optional to meet member demands.
- The awareness barrier: Low visibility remains a primary obstacle to organizational growth.
- Outcome-focused value: Value propositions must be collaborative and results-oriented.
- Community-centric experience: Connection and community are at the heart of membership.
- Mandatory personalization: Tailored experiences are now a baseline expectation, not a perk.
- The AI evolution: Artificial intelligence is rapidly redefining what members expect.
Members are expecting more of their trusted associations with the evolution of digital technology. Associations need to prove their relevance by embracing and adopting the modern tech or risk falling into a technology debt. Technology debt happens when the reality is not living up to these members’ expectations for moments of interaction with their website, data infrastructure, or community platform.
Associations are missing out on new members due to a lack of proper marketing as well. Nonmembers often have no awareness that an association catered to their particular field and interest even exists. Associations fall behind on social media and on search engine optimization (SEO) keywords that would boost visibility in an online search.
Associations also need to update their message to advertise substantive results in a way that appeals to younger professionals. Young members want tangible outcomes and compelling opportunities.
Emphasizing strong networking and community engagement has also become crucial. The 2025 Association Member Experience Report shows that 79% of community members’ associations are focused on networking and learning. Members desire insight into their field and how other professionals respond to new information or challenges.
According to the survey, 84% of members say they want an association experience personalized to their needs and situation. They expect curated programs and opportunities relevant to their career goals and interests.
Lastly, the reports reveal that the use of AI is a determining factor in member experience. It is now an expectation that AI will be factored into association infrastructure and 94% of members have no qualms about AI being used for personalization and support with human input and transparency.
Technology debt, awareness, value proposition, networking emphasis, personalization, and AI use are six essential categories that affect association member experience. Falling behind in these aspects means an association might not be living up to member expectations. Consider these trends to increase member retention and engagement.
