Thinking About the Future Offers Valuable Lessons For Associations
According to an article by Associations Now, the Association of College and University Housing Officers–International (ACUHO-I) strategic approach offers valuable lessons for associations looking to tackle future challenges.
In response to issues heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic—such as workforce sustainability, mental health, and infrastructure—ACUHO-I created a “Future of the Profession” task force in 2021. This initiative identified eight key imperatives guiding the association’s strategic efforts. Associations can learn from ACUHO-I’s focus on a broad set of priorities while allowing flexibility. Each imperative, whether facility design or mental health support, is treated as equally important, but progress can vary depending on the complexity and resources required.
The article highlights one notable practice: aligning association content, like conference programming, with these strategic imperatives. ACUHO-I ensures ongoing conversations by requiring program submissions to align with one of the eight imperatives, keeping focus on relevant industry issues.
Partnerships also play a crucial role in ACUHO-I’s success. The association collaborates with industry experts, such as pairing campus professionals with design firm representatives for the “facility design and maintenance” imperative. These partnerships bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions.
ACUHO-I’s experience highlights the importance of engaging past and present volunteers in long-term initiatives. CEO Mary M. DeNiro advises associations not to delay projects due to limited resources but to mobilize volunteers, sponsors, and staff to move forward. By leveraging the dedication of its members and adapting its approach to each priority, ACUHO-I offers many lessons for associations and has created a model for proactive, flexible leadership.
