Navigating the New Normal with a Four-Day Flex Work Week
The National League for Nursing (NLN) underwent a significant transformation in response to the evolving work environment, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to an article by ASAE. In 2019, NLN President and CEO Dr. Beverly Malone initiated a task force to reconsider workplace policies in anticipation of attracting top talent by adopting a more flexible approach to working at home. The task force, comprising diverse staff members, initially explored various options, eventually focusing on a four-day workweek within the office.
However, the implementation of this plan was delayed due to the sudden shift to remote work caused by the pandemic. During this period, the task force reevaluated aspects of the proposed policy, recommending a shorter workday and a reduction in the lunch break. The resulting NLN Flex Work Policy was fully implemented in January 2023, allowing employees the option to work either four or five days a week, with a minimum of three days required onsite. The policy aims to strike a balance between in-office and remote work, offering flexibility to employees.
The NLN’s transition to this hybrid model earned accolades, with the organization receiving recognition as Silver and Platinum Employer Transportation All-Stars for 2023. The new policy has not only maintained organizational productivity but has also led to real savings, increased efficiency, and positive impacts on the quality of life for the NLN team. Dr. Malone views this transformation as a win-win for the organization, aligning with the changing demands of the 21st-century work environment while fostering employee satisfaction and well-being.
