The Critical Role of Association Leadership in Retaining Talent
Workers in the United States are increasingly restless, with 51% considering a job change, according to a Gallup survey. While the exodus isn’t as intense as during the Great Resignation, an article by Associations Now says that employees’ long-term commitment is at a nine-year low, making the role of association leadership in retaining talent more important than ever.
Unlike previous concerns like economic anxiety or return-to-office tensions, current dissatisfaction is rooted in interpersonal dynamics. Notably, 42% of employees who left their jobs in the past year believe leadership could have done something to retain them but didn’t.
This statistic highlights a significant leadership challenge across industries, as organizations struggle to retain talent. The article highlights a Gallagher survey that revealed that 61% of employers prioritize retention and 41% focus on attracting talent. Although compensation and benefits are crucial—74% of employers have increased base salaries, and 32% have enhanced medical benefits—these measures don’t guarantee employee retention or address organizational culture.
Gallup found that 21% of employees who left said better interactions with managers could have kept them. Regular, meaningful conversations focused on goals, recognition, and collaboration are critical for employee engagement.
Leaders must proactively address employee concerns about job satisfaction and career development. The survey responses underscore that employees seek respect, attention, and support from their leaders.
