Online learning is becoming increasingly popular, especially among younger generations. Companies like LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, Coursera, and EdX are competing with SHRM and all their chapters. To differentiate online learning programs from the competition, it is important to design engaging online learning programs that deliver community and cohort programs that are popular.
The secret to successful and entertaining online learning programs is social learning. Because maintaining concentration on totally passive content requires superhuman levels of discipline and determination, MOOCs have terrible recall rates between 5% and 15%.
Cohort-based online learning programs, however, have a retention rate of 85% because social learning leads to a deeper comprehension of the subject matter, improved retention, and a stronger commitment to finishing the course.
Asynchronous programs provide a problem for social learning, but if you incorporate some of these components into the software, it’s not entirely impossible.
